The Education Department of the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze offers a diverse range of cultural activities and educational programmes for schools, families and adults. The variety of artwork in the museum makes it possible to follow different artistic and historical paths while exploring medieval, Renaissance and 19th-century art. And there is an entire department devoted to musical instruments. For schools, special programmes are organised annually for every age group: from fun activities for the littlest visitors to theatre activities for university students. For families, we offer interactive guided tours. These programmes include a tour to learn about the works coupled with an interactive workshop. For the most curious, we offer thematic guided tours. Our education activities continued even during the emergency period, when we offered opportunities to learn through the museum’s social network channels.

The saints in 15th century Florentine painting

Some of them, depicted in massive altarpieces, witness miraculous events, others are represented in individual panels of polyptych fragments. Still others are the protagonists of precious panels that originally decorated the family chapels, inside important Florentine churches. They are the saints depicted in the works of the fifteenth century in the collections of the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze. Among the works analyzed, we find Tobia and the three Archangels by Domenico di Michelino, commissioned, it is said, after the miraculous apparition in 1423 of the archangel Raphael to the nuns of Santa Felicita as told in the “memoirs” of Sister Margherita Cambi. There are three archangels in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions: Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. Created by God, they are divine messengers.

Renaissance. Masters and workshops

Renaissance: masters and workshops focuses on the realities of the workshops where, before the establishment of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, talented young people learned the artistic crafts. Apprenticeships began with young children, who their parents would entrust to a maestro to guide and instruct them until they reached the age and experience necessary to open their own shop. For important commissions, the maestro would often delegate the creation of some parts to his students, such as, for example, in the painting of the Madonna with Child and Saints by Sandro Botticelli and his apprentices, from the Medici villa of Trebbio, in which the maestro probably created the design and general composition, and left the remaining stages of implementation to his students.

A star-filled night

The Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze offers children and their families a video story dedicated to the most beautiful Christmas story of all: Jesus’ Birth. It all happened over two millennia ago. It was a magical night in which many extraordinary events occurred: a very cold night but also full of stars, in which Mary gave birth to her Child, Jesus, in a stable. Graziella Cirri, head of the museum’s educational services, narrates the journey with the visual support of masterpieces from the collection (with artworks, seen up close, by Lorenzo di Credi, Cenni di Francesco, Taddeo Gaddi, and Mariotto di Cristofano).
