Monday, May 4 at 6.30 pm: Eva Degl’Innocenti, director of Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Taranto

The series of meetings organized by the Director of Galleria dell’Accademia of Florence, Cecilie Hollberg, continues: “The Italian Museums present themselves”: the next scheduled appointment is Monday, May 6th, at 6.30 pm, in the David’s Tribune, with Eva Degl’Innocenti, director of Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Taranto.

The MArTA, one of the most important archaeological museums in the world, is an international excellence for its ability to tell the story of the city of Taranto and the surrounding area through the findings: the only Spartan colony of Magna Graecia, Taranto increases its power over the centuries up to dominate the Mediterranean and to influence Rome itself. From the earliest evidence of man’s presence, the exhibition route winds its way through the archaic era, the splendours of late classical and Hellenistic Taranto, attested by the gold and rich furnishings of the necropolis, the phases following the Roman conquest and the transformations of the upper-medieval city. With Hellenism, thanks to the high quantity of gold and silver poured on the Mediterranean markets by the oriental enterprise of Alessandro Magno, a very high level goldsmith craftsmanship was born in Taranto, famous in Antiquity and nowadays. Found in the tombs of the Hellenistic and Roman ages, the Ori of Taranto still amaze today with the great timeliness of the decorative motifs.

The MArTA is a vital place that has made its vocation as an identity and “widespread” museum evident: in fact, every day, it supports an intense activity of education and enhancement, aimed at the most diverse types of visitors, making the Museum an inclusive and open place to the community, towards which it arises not only as a strong identity reference, but also as a development engine. The National Archaeological Museum of Taranto is a twenty-first century agora.

Eva Degl’Innocenti has been director of Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Taranto since December 1st 2015. PhD in Archeology, she was director of the archaeological museum space and of the Coriosolis territory and of the Cultural Heritage Service of the local community of the Community of Plancoët Plélan Municipalities in Brittany (France), where she worked since 2010. She was a researcher and project manager for European projects on classical and medieval collections at the Musée National du Moyen Age – Cluny (Paris). From 1999 to 2008 he carried out research and study activities in archaeological excavation campaigns in Italy and Tunisia, he has curated studies of archaeological materials and collections, and scientific and cultural projects for the creation of museum spaces. Author of various publications, she has taught and held seminars in Italian and French universities.
