Tactile exploration at the Bargello Museum
Activity in the museum courtyard, including an exploration of the ‘Cannone di San Paolo’. In collaboration with UICI Florence
On Wednesday 10 June from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm, the Bargello National Museum is hosting a tactile tour designed for blind and visually impaired people.
The tour includes a visit to the courtyard, the heart of the ancient Palazzo del Podestà in Florence, now the Bargello National Museum, and a tactile exploration of the ‘Cannon of St Paul’.
The large ceremonial cannon, over 4 metres long, was commissioned by Ferdinando II de’ Medici from the bronze artist and founder Cosimo Cenni and is so named because its breech is decorated with the bearded face of the saint. The Medici coat of arms, meanwhile, is found on the carriage.
The tour includes the opportunity to touch the Cannon dedicated to St Paul whilst wearing gloves: through this tactile experience, participants will be able to discover the ornamental richness of this work, skilfully decorated with engravings, bas-reliefs and elements in the round, which evoke the rich symbolism of Medici art.
