Monday, March 10 (5:30 p.m.) will kick off the lecture series of the cultural event L’eterno contemporaneo. Michelangelo 1475 – 2025, designed to celebrate the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s birth. For the occasion, the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze will have the honor of hosting Cristina Acidini – renowned art historian as well as president of the Casa Buonarroti Foundation and the Opera di Santa Croce di Firenze – who will illustrate the fascinating epistolary relationship between the celebrated Renaissance artist and the marquise of Pescara Vittoria Colonna, in the conference Michelangelo e Vittoria Colonna, un’amicizia nel segno dell’arte.

Cristina Acidini will trace one of the most unique relationships in Italian Art History, investigating its spiritual, religious and political implications. Over a period of about ten years (between 1536-38 and 1547), the two protagonists of the Renaissance meet and establish a close correspondence. Vittoria is the addressee of some of Michelangelo’s Rime, which also offers her drawings suitable for meditation, first and foremost on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, but also on the theme, dear to her, of women in the life of Jesus: the Madonna, the Magdalene, the Samaritan woman.
